Scalargame · Free daily browser puzzles

Privacy Policy

This policy covers all puzzles on scalargame.com: Scalar, Continuum, Whenabouts, and Tectonic.

The games run in your browser. You can play without an account; sign-in is optional and enables cloud sync and leaderboards.

Information We Collect

Local Storage

Your game state (guesses, scores, streaks, saved runs, first-use hints and display preferences) is saved in your browser's storage on this device. It stays on your device unless you sign in (see Accounts).

Accounts (optional)

If you create an account, we store the email address you sign up with (or that Google shares when you sign in with Google) and the handle you choose. Game results (puzzle date, scores, accuracy) are synced to our database so you can appear on leaderboards and resume progress across devices. You can sign out and delete your account at any time, which removes your profile and synced results.

Authentication and storage are provided by Supabase. No analytics data is stored in Supabase.

Analytics

We use Vercel Web Analytics, Vercel Speed Insights, and PostHog to understand general usage patterns and performance. Collected data includes:

  • Page views and route changes
  • Device type, browser, and operating system
  • Approximate location derived from your IP address by the analytics provider
  • Game events: game, mode, puzzle date, the items you guess or place, moves, hints, scores, and accuracy grades
  • How you arrived: referring site and campaign tags, with query strings and fragments removed
  • Performance metrics (Core Web Vitals) and error reports

Vercel Web Analytics does not use cookies and identifies visitors with a daily-reset hash. PostHog assigns a random identifier so we can count visits and sessions; signing in associates that identifier with your account's random ID (never your email). PostHog may record masked session replays to diagnose layout and usability problems: all text, attributes, and form inputs are masked before recording.

PostHog events are sent to a first-party address on scalargame.com (/ingest), which forwards them to PostHog's US servers. The proxy only relays events; it does not add any data or change what is collected.

Weekly analytics archive

To keep long-term records of how the site is used, a weekly automated job copies our analytics (Vercel Web Analytics, Google Search Console, and PostHog) into a private Google Drive folder that only the site owner can access. Most of it is daily totals, such as page views, visitors per page, country or device, search clicks and impressions, and game starts and completions.

It also keeps a monthly copy of PostHog event records, pseudonymized before storage: IP addresses and profile properties are removed, location is kept only at country level, web addresses are shortened to the page path and campaign tags, and device and user identifiers are replaced with one-way salted SHA-256 hashes.

The archive is used only to understand and improve the games. It is never sold or shared. No analytics data is stored in Supabase, our account database.

Information We Do Not Collect

  • Names beyond your chosen handle
  • Cross-site tracking data
  • Advertising identifiers
  • Precise geolocation
  • Contact lists, photos, or device storage

Third-Party Services

The games rely on a small set of providers: Vercel (hosting, web analytics, speed insights), PostHog (product analytics, reached through our /ingest proxy), Supabase (authentication and database, used only if you sign in), and Google (optional Google sign-in, Search Console statistics about how the site appears in search, and Drive storage for the private analytics archive). No advertising or third-party tracking services are integrated.

Data Retention

Local storage data remains on your device until you clear this site's data in your browser. Account and leaderboard data is retained while your account exists and is removed when you delete your account. Vercel Web Analytics keeps data for 30 days, Google Search Console for 16 months, and PostHog for up to one year (session replays for 30 days), in accordance with their privacy policies. The weekly archive in the site owner's Google Drive is kept to preserve long-term history; it is aggregated or pseudonymized and contains no account details.
